Adipic acid or hexanedioic acid is the organic compound. From an industrial perspective, it is the most important dicarboxylic acid: about 2.5 billion kilograms of this white crystalline powder are produced annually, mainly as a precursor for the production of nylon. Adipic acid is produced by oxidation of a mixture of cyclohexanone and cyclohexanol, which is called KA oil, an abbreviation of ketone-alcohol oil.

Industrial Uses

1. Polymers & Resins

  • Monomers for Polymer & Resin Synthesis: Adipic acid is a key monomer in producing Nylon 6,6, a polyamide synthesized through polycondensation with hexamethylenediamine. Nylon 6,6 is renowned for its high mechanical strength, rigidity, and thermal stability, making it suitable for textiles, carpets, and molded parts in automotive and industrial applications.
  • Biodegradable & Specialty Polymers: Adipic acid is a precursor in producing PBAT, a biodegradable copolymer synthesized with 1,4-butanediol and dimethyl terephthalate. PBAT combines flexibility and biodegradability, making it suitable for applications like compostable packaging materials.

2. Cleaning & Disinfectants Solutions

  • pH Adjusters: Adipic acid is used to regulate the pH of liquid and powder detergents, ensuring optimal cleaning efficiency. It helps maintain product stability and enhances the performance of surfactants.

  • Industrial Cleaners: In heavy-duty cleaning formulations, adipic acid controls alkalinity to improve stain removal and prevent residue buildup. It also enhances the solubility of active ingredients, making cleaners more effective.

  • Dishwashing Liquids: Adipic acid adjusts the pH of dishwashing detergents to balance acidity and protect surfaces from damage. It also aids in reducing water spots and streaking on glassware.

3. Construction

  • Concrete Additives: Adipic acid derivatives can be used as plasticizers in concrete formulations to improve workability and durability. They help control the setting time and enhance the strength of concrete mixtures.

4. Metal Treatment

  • Corrosion Inhibition: Adipic acid is used in metal treatment solutions to prevent corrosion. It acts as a buffering agent to control the pH and avoid unwanted reactions in metal plating and cleaning processes.
  • Electroplating: Adipic acid ensures uniform metal deposition during the electroplating process and improves the overall quality of the metal coatings.

5. Water Treatment

  • pH Adjustment: Adipic acid can be used in water treatment formulations to adjust pH levels, particularly in wastewater treatment plants where precise pH control is critical for efficient operations.
  • Corrosion Control: It helps inhibit corrosion in water pipelines and equipment by maintaining optimal conditions within the treatment systems.

6. Animal Healthcare

  • Feed Additive Production: Adipic acid is sometimes used as a precursor in the manufacture of feed additives, helping improve the nutritional content of animal feed. Its role in controlling acidity also aids in digestive health for animals.
